Bloodstone

Bloodstone is so called because of the red spots on the stone that look like drops of blood. Actually, bloodstone is green chalcedony with red spots of iron oxide.

Because of its appearance, many superstitions are tied to this stone. Athletes would wear it associating the blood like spots with blood that might improve their performance in sports. Some soldiers would carry it to war believing it to be able to heal their wounds.

In India, bloodstone is powdered and used as a medicine or an aphrodisiac.

Bloodstone is the birthstone for March.
