Diamond Cut
The cut of a diamond refers to the expertise with which it was cut and not its shape. The diamond should be cut to maximize its fire. The better the cut, the more its brilliance would be enhanced.
Light passing through a diamond that is cut correctly would bounce off the facets and back up through the top of the stone, maximizing the light reflected back to the viewer as brilliantly as possible.
A diamond that is cut too shallow would have the light pass through the pavilion and lost through the bottome of the stone instead of being reflected back through the top surface. If the cut is too deep, the light would be lost through the sides of the stone. Hence, diamond cutting is a science as well as an art.
The cut that gives the best fire is the Ideal cut which accounts for the top 3% of stones cut. A cut that is Very Good (the next 15% of stones cut) is also very expensive. Both Ideal and Very Good cuts are best for the diamond.
Good cut accounts for the next 25% of the diamonds while a Fair cut accounts for the next 45%. All these are acceptable for use in jewelry.
A Poor cut does not meet the minimum requirement for the Fair cut and is the cheapest of the lot, all other things remaining constant. These lose most of the light through the sides and bottom and hence have minimal sparkle. As such, if you can, avoid Poor cut diamonds.
