Spinels are brilliant, hard and come in many beautiful colors. The red spinels were once mistaken for rubies and the blue spinels for sapphires. Still, spinels are precious gemstones in their own right. In fact, the British Imperial State Crown had a spinel set in it. That was the Black Prince's Ruby which was mistaken for a ruby.

Spinel is actually a cousin of ruby, though a poorer cousin. Its red is a pinkier red, which makes it beautiful in its own right.

Spinel is a favourite gemstone for the 22nd wedding anniversary.
