tanzanite
Tanzanite is a blue purple stone. It was discovered in Tanzania in 1967, and is used in modern jewelry. A beautiful stone, it has an interesting property of Pleochroism in that it can appear blue, violet, and green at the same time. From different angles, the stone appears to be a different color. At first glance, this beautiful stone may be mistaken for a sapphire, but it displays hues of purple which gives it a more mysterious aura.
The larger the stone, the deeper the color. A large genuine tanzanite ring would be a deeper blue with violet hues which look simply stunning. While smaller tanzanite gemstones display a lighter blues and lilacs. Both are gorgeous. Incidentally, these colors look wonderful on anyone with blue skin tones, so if you look great in black and silver, tanzanite necklaces would look amazing on you.
Tanzanite is believed to be a lucky gemstone and to help intense people lead less stressful lives. For those who love lore or romantic tales associated with the gemstones they wear, there aren't many tales about Tanzanite as it is a modern stone. In fact, it is the newest gemstone to be discovered. When it first came out, the first two tanzanite samples were made into tanzanite rings. A modern way to wear tanzanite is in these tanzanite bracelets which make delightful gifts for women who love jewels.
Tiffany & Co. was quick to use Tanzanite in its jewelry collections, bringing recognition to this gorgeous new discovery. In fact, it was that New York jeweller that gave the gemstone its name. It is actually a blue version of zoisite, which sounds like suicide. Not good in the marketing department, hence it was named after the only place where it is found. As it is mined exclusively in Tanzania, this is an exclusive stone. Its rarity would cause prices to shoot up as mining depletes the supplies of natural tanzanite. From 2000 to early 2007, wholesale prices of Tanzanite have already doubled. This is a stone that was discovered in 1967. Can you imagine how much tanzanite may be worth a few decades from now?
Tanzanite isn't that tough a gemstone as it is between 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, so it should be handled with care. Avoid knocking it around. Don't clean it in an ultrasound cleaner. Do not let it get into contact with acids. Treat it like the precious jewel that it is.
When first discovered, tanzanite was still quite accessible. It is becoming extremely rare as the sources of tanzanite are getting depleted from excessive mining. I would expect the price of tanzanite to skyrocket eventually. The most valuable tanzanites are the blue tanzanites.
